On Saturday, 28th June 2025, Cradley Heath will come alive with the vibrant spirit of the Women Chainmakers’ Festival. Held annually at Mary Macarthur Gardens, this free, family-friendly event commemorates the courageous women who, in 1910, led a pivotal strike demanding fair wages and better working conditions. Their victory not only transformed their lives but also laid the groundwork for workers' rights across the UK.
A Day of Celebration and Reflection
From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, attendees can immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of activities that honor the past and inspire future generations. Highlights include:
Street Theatre & Re-enactments: Witness live performances that bring to life the stories of the 1910 strike, offering a poignant glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of the women chainmakers.
Traditional Chainmaking Demonstrations: Experience the craftsmanship that defined the industry, with a blacksmith showcasing the techniques used by the women of Cradley Heath.
Guest Speakers & Political Stalls: Engage with thought leaders and activists discussing contemporary issues facing working women, while exploring stalls that highlight ongoing campaigns and support networks.
Children’s Activities: Interactive sessions designed to educate and entertain the younger generation about this significant chapter in history.
The festival also features a special procession, with participants donning Edwardian attire to honor the original strikers, and a 'Call to Arms' banner parade, symbolizing solidarity and collective action.

Honoring a Historic Legacy
The Women Chainmakers’ Festival is more than a celebration; it's a tribute to the resilience and determination of the women who fought for dignity and fair pay. In 1910, over 800 women in Cradley Heath, under the leadership of Mary Macarthur, went on strike for a living wage. Their successful campaign not only improved their own lives but also set a precedent for labor rights nationwide. You can hear more about Mary Macarthur and the struggles of the Chainmakers in this week's episode of Kickass Women of History.
