Hosts Amy Cotterill and Emma Cook Launch a Weekly Show Dedicated to the Women Who Changed History
A new podcast, Kickass Women of History, will debut on Tuesday, the January, 2025, offering a fresh perspective on the remarkable women whose stories deserve to be better known. Hosted by Amy Cotterill and Emma Cook, the podcast will explore the lives of women who made a significant impact on their families, communities, countries, or even the world — whether five years ago or five thousand.
Each episode of Kickass Women of History will focus on a different historical woman, sharing her unique story through engaging discussions with a diverse range of guests, including historians, curators, and authors. The show aims to highlight women whose contributions to society have been overlooked or forgotten, revealing their extraordinary achievements and the lasting legacies they’ve left behind.
"We want to spotlight the women whose voices have been muted by time and history," says Amy Cotterill. "These women were trailblazers in their own right, and their stories deserve to be celebrated and remembered."
Emma Cook adds, "Our goal is to educate and inspire. By telling the stories of women who broke barriers and defied expectations, we hope to empower listeners and show them the many ways women have shaped the course of history."
The first episode, set to air on 7th January, will feature a deep dive into the life of 15th-century mystic Margery Kempe, widely regarded as one of the first autobiographers in English literature. Amy and Emma will be joined by two esteemed guests: Dr. Eleanor Jackson, Curator of the British Library’s “Medieval Women: In Their Own Words” exhibition, and Professor Anthony Bale of the University of Cambridge. Together, they will explore Margery Kempe's fascinating life and how a game of ping-pong changed our understanding of the medieval world.
New episodes will be released weekly, each shedding light on the life of a different kickass woman, from ancient history to the modern era. The show promises a diverse range of stories, from political leaders to activists, artists, scientists, and everyday women whose impact has reverberated through time. Confirmed guests include medievalist and broadcaster Dr Eleanor Janega, as well as representatives of the Royal Danish Library, Harvard University, and the ArQuives in Toronto.
